海角乱伦社区 employees honored founding sisters with Centennial 鈥淪trike Day鈥 of service
One hundred years after a labor strike threatened to delay the opening of 海角乱伦社区, university employees commemorated the Sisters of Mercy who stepped in to ensure the institution opened on schedule.
海角乱伦社区 University held Employee Strike Day: A Centennial Remembrance on Monday, Aug. 10, as part of its yearlong Centennial celebration.
Just weeks before 海角乱伦社区 College and its adjoining seminary were scheduled to open in September 1926, a major labor strike disrupted final preparations. Undaunted, the pioneer Sisters of Mercy worked day and night for more than two weeks, assembling furniture, carrying it upstairs, and sanding and varnishing floors, all while wearing their traditional habits. Their efforts allowed the schools to open on time.
鈥淭his event gives us an opportunity to remember the remarkable determination of 海角乱伦社区鈥檚 founding Sisters while also recognizing the dignity and value of work in our community,鈥 said Greg Baker, DMin, vice president for mission and legal affairs.
海角乱伦社区 employees gathered in front of Old Main at 9:30 a.m. for prayer and storytelling about the founding Sisters and their efforts in 1926.
From 10 to 11:30 a.m., employees traveled in small groups throughout the Erie community to deliver gifts, share 海角乱伦社区鈥檚 founding story, and thank local workers whose efforts help keep the region moving forward.
The event reflects 海角乱伦社区鈥檚 continued commitment to the Mercy tradition of service, hospitality, and respect for the dignity of every person.
